Cate Blanchett was as queenly and ethereal as always in a gorgeous, delicate black lace and tulle Armani Privé gown. I was a little surprised as Cate does love to wear colour on the red carpet. Nevertheless, she oozed sophistication with the addition of the faux-bob hairstyle, those gorgeous diamond earrings and the pink lips.
Julianna Marguiles, a permanent member of my best-dressed lists at award shows, once again showed just why. She wore a classic Andrew Gn Resort 2014 gown with short sleeves, a deep v-neck and a voluminous but neat skirt, all with a fine gold vine embroidery. I loved her hairstyle, which looked like this from the back as it added the perfect touch of modern to her look.
Elisabeth Moss of 'Mad Men', took home the award for Best Actress in a TV movie or min-series for 'Top of the Lake'. She wore a glitzy J. Mendel Pre-Fall 2014 number which featured a deep red, almost maroon details, overlaid with black sequins. While the dress was glamorous, I wasn't too crazy about the look as a whole.
Melissa McCarthy attended the event in a custom-made dress, a collaboration between herself, seamstress Daniela Kurle and the stylist George Kotsiopolous. The gown was a cross between a robe and a wrap dress but she made it work.
Sofia Vergara encased her famous curves into a slightly different silhouette this year, compared to previous years where we've seen her in mermaid, curve-hugging dresses. It was a classic black ballgown by Zac Posen with a strapless bodice and a full skirt. As is the norm with Sofia, the dress was paired with eye-catching jewelry, in the form of this turquoise and diamond stunner from Lorraine Schwartz.
Emma Thompson, nominated for her work in 'Saving Mr. Banks' opted for a vintage Lanvin dress with an ornate, full sleeved golden top and a midi length black skirt. It was a different take to the typical red carpet gown, one that Emma carried off well.
Heidi Klum attended the Globes in a black Marchesa Spring 2014 dress with a dainty floral design. If it wasn't for the choker necklace, I would have loved this look. But also missing was some colour and a matte red or dark berry lip would have enlivened the look.
Leslie Mann was pretty as always in a classic black lace Dolce & Gabbana gown with a large frilly peplum. Straight locks and pink lips finished off her simple look.
Kate Beckinsale wasn't wearing black per se, but her gun-metal Zuhair Murad Couture gown was certainly on the dark side of things, in the best way possible. With the gown fitting her like a glove, the voluminous updo and her glowing skin, Kate was a complete siren on the red carpet last night.
